THE local music scene is set to embrace a dose of American blues with a visit from not one, but two Californian bands.

Arriving in true rock ‘n’ roll style, the two will be touring the UK this summer in a single van, with Cardigan's Small World Theatre being one of their many destinations.

Although the Rainbow Girls’ might trigger thoughts of calm, colourful, flower power lyrics, their gritty determination to climb up the ranks of the music industry, having started from widespread street busking, in many ways encapsulates their ‘Electric All-Lady Stomp-Folk Grand Band’ style.

Meanwhile, Marty O’Reilly and The Old Soul Orchestra provide a more modern take on the classic blues sound that swept across America in the 50s and 60s. In his musical youth, Marty took inspiration from the likes of Blind Willie and John Lee Hooker, as well as influential idols such as John Fahey, Nick Drake and Tom Waits.

Making up his trio today is Jeff Kissell on double bass and Chris Lynch playing the unmistakable sound of the fiddle. The combination allows a soulful, melodic quality that seamlessly switches from a driving, energetic take on blues, to a more feathery, tranquil vibe.

Join the Small World Theatre in welcoming these budding musical talents on Friday, June 27 at 8pm.
