LONDON based acoustic quartet Penniless Cove are set to sooth audiences with their “expansive yet intricate soundscape” at The Plas Hyfryd Hotel in Narberth on August 13.

The group has a strong tie with Pembrokeshire, not least because lead singer Phoebe Osborne will be returning to her home county, but also because the name Penniless Cove was inspired by a cobbled street in Tenby.

Their sound has been described as dark, quirky, pop-folk that uses tales of everyday life, and combines playful melodies with melancholic lyrics and theatrical presentation.

The mischievous vocals of Osborne are matched with powerful performances on the piano, upright bass, cajon, strings and vocal harmonies.

The group also have an upcoming album which is due in late October. It will be the third release for the band; however Phoebe has noted that the new piece will move away from the previous two ‘live’ recordings, Out On A Roof (2012), and Trials Tubes and Tribulations (2011).

In preparation for the new release, the group has embraced the countryside lifestyle, having recorded the piano, drums and percussion in a farm house in Ardley. However the vocals and backing came later on at London’s Purple Room Studios, leaving just the strings and final touches to be recorded.

The next few months look promising for the Cove; their latest release “I Hope Your Coffee Burns” is set to be accompanied by a music video. Following on, the band will be touring South Wales which will include the Brecon Jazz Festival and the homecoming gig in Narberth.

Tickets for the upcoming August event are £7 and will be available on the door. Music will start at 8pm, and if you wish, meals can be ordered from The Plas Hyfryd Hotel on 01834 869006.
