REGGAE sounds, dubstep classics and jungle anthems will take clubbers back to the old skool as Substantial Sound makes its third appearance in Haverfordwest on Friday (February 12).

Run by local DJs Charly Says and Associate - aka Charlie Willatts and Derren Heath - the event has already made waves since its inception late last year, with local electronic music fans relishing the chance to hear great tracks on their doorstep.

And the duo's latest event will also be raising money for hospice at home charity the Paul Sartori Foundation, in memory of their close friend, who died earlier this year.

Warming up the decks will be Cardiff-based but Fishguard raised Spooks, who got his first break at 17, and was one of the first DJs in Wales to include dubstep in his sets.

Cutting his teeth at local raves and the fondly-remembered 'mansion parties', he moved to Bristol where he became a resident DJ at Fracture Clinic.

With friend Shaun Phillips he started a night called Work, and then became resident at Crazylegs, a popular club night and record label.

Since then he has played records all over Bristol and beyond, including at Boomtown Fair and Love Saves the Day, and supported James Blake and Jamie XX.

He also written extensively about music, both online and in print.

"These days, I play everything – blues and funk; techno and speed garage – but for this set I'll be dusting off my old dubstep records for the first time in years," said Spooks.

Headliner Del Toro started aged just 14, and has supported Goldie, Fabio and Digital.

"I have always had a massive love for the old reggae selectors playing on the big soundsystems - the likes of Jah Shaka and David Rodigan - so now that's what I do, drop big reggae and reggae influenced sounds," said Del Toro.

Also headlining will be DJ Escher, whose early taste for electronica focused on the 'pioneers' like Paul Hardcastle, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream, "through the acid house and rave era, right up to the present day via drum and bass, trance and funky house and pretty much everything in-between".

DJ Escher has played to huge crowds, and alongside scene 'giants' Lisa Lashes, Dave Pearce, Slipmatt, BK, Anne Savage and many more.

"Pinning down my style is hard, my mantra is that a good tune is a good tune, regardless of age or genre," he said.

"I have recently noticed a lot of producers are incorporating old skool jungle tekno sounds into their tracks.

"This has seen me pulling a lot of records from that era out, to bring the original beats, baselines and breaks to a new audience, highlighting the genius of those pioneering producers and rocking dance floors in the process."

Substantial Sound co-organiser Charly Says - aka Charlie Willatts - will be playing the late slot, dropping jungle anthems and some rare dub plates and promos, not to mention some choice recent releases.

"Expect deep bass, quality break beats and good vibes," said Charlie.

"The new gear includes a pair of subwoofers with twice the output of our existing JBL speakers, which will improve the sound on the dance floor."

Substantial Sound takes place on Friday, February 12, from 10pm to 3am, at El Rio, Quay Street. Entry is £4 and all profits will go to charity.
