Be careful what you wish for….
Artistic Licence have presented a varied programme of musical theatre, classical and contemporary drama over the years.
The latest production of ‘Into The Woods’ marks the return to Stephen Sondheim following the success of ‘Company’ in 2010.
Under the musical direction of Sam Howley, the cast is drawn from local performers and includes several members of the Torch Theatre staff – Chloe Wheeler, Glesni Edwards and Geraint Sayers together with other local performers including Will Oliver, Janine Lewis, Owain and Sally Roach, Jane Morris, Pip Marsh, Gabriel Haslam, Louise Hales, Alex Jukes, Frank Tobin, Meg McFarlane, Margaret Slater-Harries, Muriel Carpenter and Pam Williams. Marcus Lewis plays Cinderella’s prince.
Carol Mackintosh and Trisha Biffen are co-directing the production.
I had the opportunity to see the Friday night show.
Having a rough idea of the story through watching the big screen film in 2014 which starred Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and James Corden to name but a few I was looking forward to seeing the story told live on stage.
The production added a true depth to the tale, which has many layers to it and although the set is simple it blends really well with the story.
All cast members added something different to the story, including amusement, musicality, mortality to name but a few.
There are top-notch polished performances from all the cast members. But special mentions would go to Chloe Wheeler as the baker's wife and to 'Little Red Riding Hood' who really stood out, both with exceptional performances.
The only shame is that the run of this show is not longer, giving more people the opportunity to see it. If you have tonight free, grab a ticket quick to catch this grown up musical. Tickets are available from the box office on 01646 695267 or online (torchtheatre.co.uk).
