THIS year’s Schubertiade at Rhosygilwen this weekend, is an all-Welsh affair led by Llyr Williams the distinguished pianist from North Wales.

He was educated at Ysgol Hooson in Rhosllannerchrugog and Ysgol Morgan Llwyd in Wrexham, and then read music at The Queen's College, Oxford from 1995-1998, and the Royal Academy of Music as a postgraduate scholar.

He won every available prize at the Academy and received its highest academic award, the Diploma of the Royal Academy of Music (DipRAM) (2000).

In 2009 he was awarded the Glyndŵr Award for an Outstanding Contribution to the Arts in Wales and is regarded by many as one of the foremost exponents of Schubert and Beethoven’s piano compositions.

On Saturday at Rhosygilwen he will be paying two of Schubert’s piano sonatas and one by Chopin. On Sunday he will be the principal soloist for a Sunday recital with Côr Aberteifi and the WNO Strings.

They will perform Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy and Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony.

On Friday it is the turn of young talented violinist Charlie Lovell-Jones playing a programme of Beethoven, Schubert and Bach.

Also on Sunday the Schubertiade will feature another Welsh icon, Elinor Bennett, playing a programme of Schubert on her concert harp and telling stories about the origins of the harp and its history in Welsh music.
