TORCH Theatre Company presents its brand new play The Wood, which will be performed live at Cardigan’s Theatr Mwldan on Tuesday, March 13 (7.30pm).

From Owen Thomas, writer of the award winning Grav, this is an emotional and powerful play written to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I, directed by Peter Doran.

It is July 1916, and as the Battle of the Somme rages, Mametz Wood echoes to the sounds of war as the 38th Welsh Regiment face the ferocity of the German army.

Inspired by a true story. Dan and Billy, two young soldiers, forge a friendship in the heat of the build up to the infamous battle.

When Billy is killed in Mametz Wood, he leaves behind a devastated friend and, back home, a heart-broken and pregnant wife.

Featuring a beautifully designed and atmospheric set by Sean Crowley, this original production takes its audience back in time through Dan’s haunting, traumatic memories of the war and the mark it has made on his life since.

A tale of friendship, love and sacrifice.

“Owen Thomas’ commemorative play, based on an idea by Dafydd, is a touching tribute to the fallen,” says The Stage.

“Being part of a small cast is a tribute to the actors’ skills and stamina, to sustain the momentum and chemistry between them as their story unfolds,” writes Art Scene In Wales.

“Ifan Huw Dafydd who plays Dan is an imposing figure with a booming voice; a senior actor who holds the play and commands its audience,” adds Wales Arts Review.

Tickets to see The Wood are £14 (£12) £3 mates rates (a scheme for 11-18 year olds, see Theatr Mwldan’s website for details) and are available now from Theatr Mwldan’s box office on 01239 621200, online at www.mwldan.co.uk or via the new Mwldan app.
