The latest exhibition at the White Lion Street Gallery, Tenby features work by artists all over the county and beyond.
The title of the exhibition, Little and Large, isn’t a reference to the 1980s comedians, but a description of the paintings and textiles produced by 20 invited artists.
The wide range of artists hail from all corners of Pembrokeshire and nearby Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire, as well as from further afield, such as Gwynedd, Builth Wells, the Vale of Glamorgan and Shropshire.
Each artist has chosen their own theme and preferred medium with the only rule being that the work must include at least two large and a number of related smaller pieces.
Valerie Land shows her gouache and watercolour pieces of boats on still water; Tim Jenkins’ oil paintings depict aerial views of Tenby and Caldey along with other harbour and rockscapes, and Sian O’Doherty’s textiles — handprinted fabrics with machine and hand stitching — concentrate on details of moving seas.
Collage and origami form the basis of Glenn Ibbitson’s more abstract work, while Elizabeth Haines shows still lifes based on French pottery and fruits. Janis Fry, in her latest reincarnation as a painter, shows moody mixed-media seascapes, in contrast with the pure light-filled watercolour landscapes of David Bellamy and the gentle portraits of a child reading by Lyn Marsden-Watkins. Venice scenes in oil by Michael Hardwick, cockerels and cows by Penny Timmis and Pembrokeshire farms in Jenny Keal’s soft pastels are shown alongside Susan Sands’ boats and Carole King’s studies of seaweed. Challenging and unusual subject matter is tackled in the mythical and constructed landscapes by Colin Finn; the skulls, rotting fruit and reflections in tin foil by Geoff Yeomans and the paintings in ink, acrylic and mixed media by Andie Clay, who finds beauty in ordinary things. Dorian Spencer Davies’ illustrative style, the impasto acrylics of Sue Pomery Wilks and the wintery screen-prints of Roy Marsden are all easily absorbed into this eclectic exhibition.
Continuing through the Christmas period until January 4th, the Little and Large exhibition shows more than 100 pieces to form a huge and diverse range of exciting contemporary work for sale by 20 very talented artists.
The gallery in White Lion Street, next to the cinema in Tenby, is open from 10am to 5pm every day, except for Wednesday and Sunday. To view online visit www.artmatters.org.uk, or for further information, call 01834 843375.
