Pembroke Dock Library is currently showing an exhibition with a difference, called Pictures from Pixels.

At first glance it may appear that the many images on show are traditional portrait and landscape scenes, but closer examination reveals that they have all been created on a computer.

Artist Brian Lloyd, from Port Lion near Haverfordwest, uses Corel Painter, a computer programme which allows him to paint straight on to the screen, just as a conventional artist would paint on canvas or paper.

He creates traditional style paintings, not illustrations or computer animation. He paints subjects including portraits, animals, flowers and local, Japanese and Italian landscapes.

“Many people think of computer art as little cartoons and things rather than traditional art.

“It is much easier than conventional painting, as you can paint in amazing detail.

Brian said: “By enlarging each part of the picture you can paint pixel by pixel and you don’t waste any canvas.

“If you use the wrong colour you can just flick it out and use another colour.”

Brian studied art and photography in Monmouthshire in the 1950s, but decided to become an engineer, following the advice of his father. His work has taken him all over the world with the United Nations, Overseas Development Ministry and BT, before he retired in Pembrokeshire.

Many of his images are recreated from photographs taken on his many travels. Visitors can jump from Milan to India with Brian’s colourful and enchanting pictures.

Just like any artist, Brian spends a long time working on his paintings, and the high level of detail takes patience and dedication.

He has been painting in this way for the last three or four years. Brian said: “This is the first exhibition I have decided to do. It was actually because my wife was getting fed up of all the pictures I produced.

“She said: ‘Go and do something with them.’”

Brian hopes this will demonstrate that budding artists can produce a wide variety of pictures in many different styles, without using lots of expensive canvas and gallons of paint.

Brian Lloyd’s Pictures from Pixels is on show until December 30th at Pembroke Dock Library, Water Street, from 9.30am to 5.30pm.
