A fisherman who fell overboard near the mouth of the Haven waterway died on Monday afternoon.

Angle RNLI and the Port of Milford Haven Pilot Cutter 'Skomer' responded to a mayday sent from Spanish fishing boat the Vidar after a 45-year-old Belgian fisherman fell overboard near Turbot Bank, four nautical miles south of St Annes Head, at around 3.30pm.

The crew had managed to get the man back aboard and the trawler was heading for Milford Haven, when Angle RNLI's all weather lifeboat arrived on the scene.

Two crew members transferred to the boat to administer casualty care to the man, who was in a serious condition.

A Milford Haven Port vessel left to pick up paramedics, but the RAF rescue helicopter 169 arrived on the scene before they were transferred from shore.

He was airlifted to Withybush Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
