Haven waterway set for another Seafair extravaganza

An armada of traditional and classic vessels will descend on the Milford Haven Waterway next summer, as the internationally recognised Seafair Haven festival returns to Pembrokeshire.

The maritime festival was a huge success in 2012, and plans are now underway to organise the fifth Seafair Haven from June 7 to 14, 2014, for traditional and classic vessels and long boat rowing to celebrate the 22-mile waterway.

The event, organised by the Tall Ships Wales Trust, will be supported by about 200 ocean going keel boats from all over the United Kingdom and the Atlantic coast of Europe, Keel boats will be stationed at the Milford Haven Marina, while the sail and oar vessels will be based in Lawrenny.

Organiser Martin Sykes said: "Seafair has developed into an event that has nationwide appeal among the sailing fraternity. In the Milford Haven Waterway we have not only one of the finest natural deep water harbours in the world, but a waterway that flows into the heart of a National Park. Add to that the unrivalled sailing opportunities around the coastline and you can see why we are so confident that the 2014 event will be a success.”

Riverside communities and organisations will welcome the armada and hundreds of crew members by organising entertainment and activities, including a Milford Haven Port Authority reception on June 11. Races and cruises will be held throughout the week.

The festival will culminate in a Parade of Sail, when the visiting vessels will gather in line to make their way back to home harbours.

Mr Sykes added: "Seafair does inject a great deal of money into the local economy as the visitors go out of their way to visit local pubs, enjoy Pembrokeshire produce, and to listen to traditional and contemporary music.”
