Plans to close 28 public toilets across Pembrokeshire revealed

Pembrokeshire County Council is considering reducing the number of public toilets it operates.

Members of the Environment Overview & Scrutiny Committee will discuss a proposal to review the future of 28 public toilets next week.

At present the council maintains 93 public toilets across the county at an annual cost of £1.5m a year.

The council said this equates to 7.9 toilet blocks per 10,000 head of population - the highest ratio in Wales - and compares to 4.7 per 10,000 head of population in the similar area of Cornwall.

Following an initial review, a report to next Thursday’s committee meeting proposes consulting further about the future of 28 blocks with a view to possible closure.

The provision of public toilets by local authorities is not a statutory function and closure of 28 facilities would save the council about £135,000 a year.

“The council recognises that public toilets play a role in supporting the contribution that tourism makes to the local economy, particularly for those for whom ready access to a toilet is a consideration on grounds of age, health (including pregnancy) or disability,” says the report.

“The 28 facilities in question have been identified for removal from Council management on the basis of manageable impact in respect of tourism and with limited welfare effects on residents and visitors.”

If the Environment Overview & Scrutiny Committee agrees with the proposal, it will go out to consultation and a public toilet strategy developed for the remaining 65 facilities.

The 28 toilets under review are: Croesgoch, Crymych, Dinas Cross (Main Road), Fishguard Square, Gwaun Valley Sychpant, Letterston, Maenclochog, Mathry, Nevern, Solva Upper Lay-by, St David’s Quickwell Hill, Trefin, Burton, Clynderwen, Lawrenny, Llangwm Black Tar, Llanstadwell Hazelbeach, Milford Haven Manchester Square, Milford Haven The Rath, Newgale adj to The Pebbles Café, Newgale adj to Duke of Edinburgh public house, Neyland Marina Brunel Quay, Pembroke Black Horse, Pembroke Parade, Pembroke Dock Front Street, Pembroke Dock Hobbs Point, St Florence, St Ishmaels.

Pembs CC stated they support local producers and welsh meat - we found they bought horse overseas on the cheap for the most vulnerable in Society.

They have claimed they do everything they can to support tourism and now they want to close Public toilets - they (as someone else said) taking the wee wee - or possibly lying hypocrtts who only care about themselves and their own wallets and SOD everyone else in Pembrokeshire

As summer visitors for 7 months we find it unbelievable that many of the toilets we use are being considered for closure. How can the Council call itself a tourist area when they are unable to provide even the most basic of facilities. What happens when someone is reported for seeing up a tree ??

It costs £1.5 million to maintain 98 toilets (average £16,000 each) but closing 28 toilets only saves £135,000 (average £4,800 each), they must be only open in the summer months.
Surely there are other savings that can be made at County Hall

Interesting suggeston "stop paying our rates" I wonder how many people in Pembrokeshire are actually paying rates.

Its bad enough that toilets close in the winter months, let alone proposals to close toilets.
Those of us who work and drive around the county, rely on them.
I just cannot believe that for such a small saving, they intend to close this vital service for tourists and residents alike.
Will the Council then employ enforcement officers to fine people for having to do their business in the open air?
May I suggest they close the toilets inside County Hall as well?

In today's Western Mail the following advert for staff.
Head of education salary £92,950
Head of Inclusion what is this job salary £79,300
Head of performance and Community what is this job salary £79,300.
Lets merge these jobs with Carmarthenshire and keep the toilets open. The previous head of education did not have a good track record so lets scrap this post and put the monies to weekly bin collections. The local authority must think that we are all naive and why are we spending our money on wasted positions. If we get the CEO we will have sufficient monies to keep our services.

Welshman - I agree about the merger BUT look at BPJ (actually has anyone seen him in 17 years?) and then the Carmarthenshire Chief exec who despite rules against it is using the Councils resources to sue someone who disagreed with him in the High Court - although the judge - was how can I put this ? didn't appear to agree in his voracity 100% or any of the few council officials forced to support him in the high court - just my opinion - search #daftarrest in twitter -
