Police call off daily searches for missing Haverfordwest man Ben Thompson

Milford Mercury: Missing: Ben Thompson. Missing: Ben Thompson.

Police officers looking for missing Haverfordwest man Ben Thompson in Cardiff have confirmed that daily searches are to end.

Since Ben, aged 34, was reported missing in Cardiff on Saturday, February 2nd, a thorough investigation has been conducted.

A search operation has involved up to 50 officers, including detectives and specialist search teams, who have spent many hours searching the Leckwith area of Cardiff where he was last seen.

Specialist sonar equipment has also been used to search the River Ely.

South Wales Police Chief Inspector Eddie Ough said: “Despite the skill, professionalism and best efforts of everyone involved we have unfortunately been unable to find Ben.

“Although daily searches of the river are no longer taking place, we will continue to do our best to find Ben with periodic searches over the coming weeks and months.

“Ben’s family have been updated and our thoughts are with them during this very difficult time.”

Ben was in Cardiff city centre on February 2nd where he attended the Wales v Ireland Six Nations game at the Millennium Stadium.

CCTV footage shows Ben crossing Leckwith Road into Lawrenny Avenue at 7.17pm that day and images capture him minutes later walking down a lane at the end of Lawrenny Avenue towards wasteland.

But despite everyone's best efforts there have been no further confirmed sightings of Ben.

Police thanked press and public have been thanked for their support during the search operation.

this has really upset me this morning, i haven't had contact with ben since school but i really feel for his family and close friends this must be a real kick in the teeth for them. i don't believe the police should stop doing searches it seems to me they are trading this case for the usual easier 'crimes' to solve. if they stop searching what chance does the family have in ever finding out what happened to their loved one. police should be ashamed of themselves !!
