New charity making friends in Milford Haven

First published in News

A newly formed charity is making friends in Milford Haven after raising more than £1,300.

Back in May 2012, Robert Hoggins set up 'Friends of Precelly Place,' which aimed to raise money for Meningitis UK.

Since then, the charity, which was launched as a tribute to Robert's cousin Hannah Gwilliam, who died of Meningitis last year, has raised £1,343.61 thanks to the support from local businesses and residents.

Robert, who has lived in Milford Haven all his life, said: "Neighbours and friends have been great, and my family have been very supportive.

"We are in a recession, yet that hasn't stopped people contributing."

A number of nearby businesses, including the Haven Fish Cafe, Spar, the Premier Store, and Meads Leisure Centre, have all helped by selling Meningitis UK wristbands, pin badges, and displaying collection boxes. ASDA is also set to join the charity.

Last November, Robert, of Precelly Place, also took part in a sponsored head shave at Kutos hairdressers, which raised more than £300.

Haven Fish Cafe has raised more than £400. Owner Ian Milsom said: "The majority of that money has come from putting 5p pieces in the box when people pay for a plastic bag."

Robert, aged 46, said that many of his neighbours also deserved praise for the total.

He said: "Whenever they use the chip shop they always put money into the box. It really helps as it all adds up."

At that this point, Robert said that he has no set targets in terms of how much his charity can raise, but he will keep raising money for Meningitis UK.
