MILFORD Haven Junior Band members are celebrating after claiming silver in their first ever competition.

Led by 19-year-old Bron Parratt, the band travelled to Burry Port for the competition, and thoroughly enjoyed their first prize-winning performance in the under-19s large ensemble category.

Having played with Johnston, Milford Haven Town and Goodwick Brass Bands from the age of seven, Bron took on the role of musical director and conductor of the junior section when it formed in 2011.

Since then, band has grown from five to 13 members, and has performed several local concerts.

“I really enjoy conducting the junior band and put all my effort into getting the best out of them, every week they turn up happy and excited to play and it is not only a good experience for them but also a good experience for myself as we are always learning together,” said Bron.

“Burry Port was a great first competition for the junior band and they played the best I had ever heard them play.

“The adjudicators and everyone involved were very friendly and made us feel welcome. I was so pleased when they announced that we had come away with a silver award however I was not surprised at all!”

She added: “I couldn't have done this myself and would like to thank Natalie Hobbs and Jeff Bourne too for helping sort out music and have those very important extra rehearsals.”

Those taking part were Jonathan Wild, Nicholas McDonald, Matthew Ashton Smith, Luke Maloney, Charlton Nichol, Amy Power, Lucy Hobbs, Rachel Maloney, Ross Owen, Carys Llewellyn, Teifion Owen, Sara Llewellyn and Philip Davies.

The band is now getting ready for its next competition later this year.

New members are always welcome, with ages ranging from seven to 17, and all levels of skill encouraged to take part.

Rehearsals are every Tuesday at Hubberston community centre, from 6pm until 7pm.
