A SECOND World War mine was blown up by experts after being discovered by surfers near Dale on Saturday (February 15).
30-year-old Ryan Sheppard, from Milford Haven, had been surfing near Watwick Bay with friend Gareth Reynolds, 25, when the pair discovered two suspicious objects on the beach.
Worried they could potentially be bombs or mines, the pair called emergency services, and the area was soon cordoned off while police and coastguard crews waited for bomb disposal experts to arrive.
A controlled explosion of one of the items was carried out by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) early on Sunday morning, covering the beach in shrapnel.
A spokesman for the coastguard said the detonated object is thought to have been a Mark XIX anti-ship mine, which were used during the Second World War.
He added that the other object was most likely a mooring buoy from a warship.
