A 24-HOUR road trip spanning five nations has raised more than £3,000 for a Welsh prostate cancer charity.

Five members of Milford Haven Round Table raised £3,640 by driving a custom sign-written Skoda Superb through England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland in under 24 hours.

“Everything went to plan and smoothly with no problems and no delays,” said outgoing chairman Ralph Rees, who added that it had been a ‘unique and epic journey’.

The group set off from Milford Haven on Friday, March 28, with each member taking a turn behind the wheel during the day-long trip.

Along the way they met with Round Table members in North Wales, Deeside, the Wirral and Scotland, and enjoyed a few pints of ‘the black stuff’ once they had crossed the finish line.

The challenge was a ‘grand finale’ to Ralph’s year of fundraising as chairman, in which he has helped clock up £15,000 for the cancer charity.

In that time, the group has also donated more than £7,000 to local groups and good causes.

Taking the wheel as chairman for the coming year will be Dan Davies, who joined Ralph, current president Paul Phillips, past chairman Alex Bower, and life honorary member Glyn Edwards on the recent trip.

“Sincere thanks to all those who met us on our journey and to everyone who have donated through our Just Giving page,” said Ralph.

The money raised will go to Prostate Cymru – which is trying to raise £1.65million for state-of-the-art robotic surgery equipment for Wales.

At present, if patients choose to have ‘robotic’ surgery – which lowers the risk of complications and improves recovery time – the have to travel to England and pay for it.

“It’s wrong that there is currently no opportunity for men to have this treatment in Wales,” said Ralph.

The group’s donation page will remain open for a few more weeks, and can be found at www.justgiving.com/fivenationschallenge.
