A GROUP of tourists proved ‘sat navs’ are no substitute for local knowledge over the Bank Holiday weekend, when they drove into the sea at Angle.
Four women, on holiday from London , had to be rescued from their car at around 9.30pm on Sunday .
The group had been planning a trip from Milford Haven, where they were staying, to the Old Point House pub.
A spokesman for Milford Haven coastguard said the women had followed the instructions of their sat nav, took a wrong turning, and travelled around 400m down a ‘no through road’ before they realised the hire car was bonnet-deep in water.
St Govan’s coastguard located the vehicle and helped the women – who were all uninjured – on to dry land, and the group made it onwards to the Old Point House, where pub manager Alycia Watkins said they got ‘quite a ribbing’ from the locals.
“They were definitely in need of a stiff drink or two,” said Alycia, who added that in the 10 years she has been in Angle she has never heard of anyone driving into the water.
“They did say that the locals were quite brave to drive on these roads, I didn’t have the heart to tell them we actually stick to the roads though!”
A breakdown firm later recovered the car.
