The shock resignation of Cllr Anne Hughes has forced a reshuffle of Pembrokeshire County Council's cabinet.

Milford Haven's Anne Hughes resigned from her post as the deputy member for social welfare because of personal reasons, on Tuesday, but will still continue to act as a county and town councillor.

She said: "I will definitely continue to represent my ward and I will continue to work as hard as possible for the people I represent.

"I resigned from the cabinet for personal reasons, and it had nothing to do with politics or anything else.

"I shall miss the work and the involvement I enjoyed at the time and I hope I contributed in some way in assisting the cabinet members as deputy and I hope I always put in 110%."

Cllr Hughes first joined the cabinet in September 2004 as deputy member for housing and community safety but her portfolio was changed in October 2005 when she became deputy for social welfare.

Councillor John Davies has announced that Cllr Huw George will take over from Cllr Hughes as deputy for social welfare.

Cllr Davies commented: "It is with regret and reluctance I have to accept Cllr Hughes' resignation as a deputy member of the cabinet.

"Anne has in her short period of office contributed much to the growing challenges of social justice issues within our county. I have no doubt she will continue to contribute positively to the work of this council as an elected member."

He added that Cllr George's background as a minister of religion, and his reputation for working with young people in various parts of the county places him in good stead to continue his important role within the council.
