A YOUNG woman from Haverfordwest will be tackling the dizzy heights of Kilimanjaro this autumn, to raise money in memory of her late grandmother.

Charlotte George, 22, and friend, Kate Carns, hope to complete the climb in October, to raise money and awareness for Pancreatic Cancer UK.

The two were inspired by Charlotte’s nan Betty Mullane, from Milford Haven, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. Sadly, she lost her battle with the disease in March.

In the lead-up to the big climb the friends, will be running five half-marathons dressed as the famous Super Mario brothers, as well as taking part in the almighty Tough Mudder Challenge.

The pair’s efforts are in the hope of spreading awareness of pancreatic cancer, and raising money for this important charity.

Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all of the 21 most common cancers in the UK with only about four per cent those diagnosed surviving five years or more.

Charlotte said: “In May last year my Nan was diagnosed of pancreatic cancer and after intense treatment in August she overcame the disease.

“Unfortunately, in February this year she discovered it returned and within a month she lost her battle with the cancer.

“She was always a very positive and active lady and she is our inspiration.

“We’ve been training hard and have already completed three half marathons in Cardiff and Llanelli, and Plymouth and will be running the Wales half marathon in July.

“We want to beat our target and raise as much money as possible for this amazing charity and make my Nan proud.”
