CAREW Control Tower is bracing itself for a parachute invasion this weekend (August 9 and 10).

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, the popular Wings Over Carew returns this Saturday (August 9) and Sunday (August 10).

The Carew Cheriton Control Tower will open its doors to the public each day from 10am to 4pm for what promises to be an even bigger and better event.

Set to be one of the highlights of a packed programme, the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team is dropping by at 11am on the Saturday.

The crowd can also look forward to being wowed by a Dakota flypast on both days.

Other attractions include the Welsh Army Reserves Transport Regiment, the RAF ATC band and drill team, Dyfed and Glamorgan Corps of Drums, Swansea pipe band, a static Spitfire display, vintage military vehicles and much more.

There will be a dedication service again this year but this time on both days, plus military bands and children’s activities.

Volunteer Keith Hamer said: “Last year it was just beautiful and it’s going to be a great day again this year. We just want people to come and enjoy, and experience, a bit of wartime history.”

And there are big plans for the future, with volunteers considering a possible move to establish the tower as a military museum for Wales.

“We beg, borrow and steal,” said Keith. “We’ve worked very hard to get the Control Tower looking like it does.

“It was a cow shed after the war and it took three years just to get the white wash off the building, now it’s back to its original state – inside and out.

“The tower is something unique to Pembrokeshire. At the end of the day it’s for Pembrokeshire.

“Because of the Military interest here it could possibly become a Military Museum of Wales. We haven’t got one and why shouldn’t we have one?”

More than 2,000 people attended last year’s event, which saw the unveiling of a memorial dedicated to air personnel who lost their lives locally while serving in both World Wars.

Entry is £3 for adults and £1 for under 14s £1, with under fives going free.
