SOPHIE Mansell, 25, from Milford Haven has raised more than £200 for Diabetes UK Cymru by completing the Cardiff half-marathon.

Inspired by the impact the condition has had on her best friend, Alex McCarthy, Sophie has been training hard over the last few weeks to prepare for the race, which took place in Cardiff on Sunday, October 5.

Her hard work paid off, as Sophie finished the race in 2 hours 30 minutes and 29 seconds, crossing the finish line with her two friends Nicola Ford and Helen Bray.

Sophie said: “I decided to challenge myself to run this half marathon to help make a difference to people across Wales who are living with diabetes.

I’ve seen first-hand the difference it can make to someone’s life as my best friend Alex has had the condition since we were both children.

Alex, 25, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of seven.

“Over the years she has been on a roller coaster with the condition and the past four months have been extremely tough.

“I wanted to show her my support by raising money for Diabetes UK, who give vital information and support to help people living with diabetes and help raise awareness of the condition.

Sophie has so far raised £220 for the charity, with friends Nicola and Helen bringing the trio’s total up to £300.

Diabetes UK Cymru’s Director Dai Williams said: “Diabetes is a serious condition but if it is managed correctly people with diabetes can live healthy, happy lives.”

People with Type 1 diabetes have to manage their blood glucose levels through taking daily insulin doses.

No one knows what causes the condition, but it’s not to do with being overweight and it isn’t currently preventable.

Running, like other forms of physical activity, can help people with diabetes manage their condition more effectively.

“The money Sophie has raised will go a long way towards helping us continue to support the 173,000 people diagnosed with diabetes in Wales to help them avoid some of the serious complications of the condition such as heart disease, stroke and amputation,” said Mr Williams.

“Diabetes UK Cymru is delighted to have Sophie’s support and we were cheering her on all the way.”
