THIS month Milford Haven School is proud to highlight the sporting achievements of 15-year-old Matthew Williams.

Matthew started running when he was in Year 7 and to date he has since represented Wales on a number of occasions.

He has represented the school in many cross country and track competitions over the years and his success continues to grow.

He has been a member of Pembrokeshire Harriers for the last 4 years and trains with them twice every week.

His training schedule, however, goes further than this as he runs for at least an hour every night after school.

In 2013 Matthew broke 3 records with his running 51.7 seconds for the 400metres, 1minute 59 seconds for the 800metres and 4 minutes 0.01 seconds for the 1500m.

2013 also saw him as a finalist in the Pembrokeshire Sports Awards.

He has worn the Welsh vest on six occasions, being the youngest competitor in the Welsh under-17 1500m competition this year.

He has competed three times in the London mini-marathon, twice in the British Schools Cross Country championships and is currently the West Wales Champion in under-17 cross country.

Matthew is an all-round sportsman and has played rugby, football and cricket in the past but has now given them all up to concentrate on running.

He is a member of the School Council where he represents the views of Year 11 pupils and has helped with making decisions on how the curriculum is taught, implementing changes in the canteen and deciding on end of year rewards.

He is currently studying for his GCSEs next year and his future plan is to study for a sports degree at university.

This month, Matthew will compete in a cross country competition, where if he finishes in the top four he will be selected for the Welsh under-17 Cross Country.

We congratulate Matthew on all his achievements and wish him well in this forthcoming competition and for his future.

Maybe we will see him in the next Commonwealth Games in 2018.
