A PROJECT to train young people as lifeguards has kicked off, following a donation from the Port of Milford Haven.
Swim Narberth applied to the Port’s Community Fund to run lifeguard and first aid courses which will not only teach vital skills, but encourage volunteering. Participants who sign up to the course also agree to give their time to the group for 15 hours a week for the first six months in order to benefit the local community and receive valuable work experience.
Jennifer Price, executive committee member of Swim Narberth, said: “We are really grateful to the Port of Milford Haven for funding this project.
"We’re aiming to encourage teenagers who are not in school or further education to become involved with our team of volunteers at the pool.
"We have also encouraged older members of the community to come along and join the 55+ club and many a senior citizen has learnt to swim with this group.”
Anna Malloy, PR and Communications Manager at the Port of Milford Haven, added: “We are always keen to support organisations that promote safety in and around the water, particularly as so many people in Pembrokeshire spend their leisure time by the coast.
"By combining lifeguard courses with volunteering, this is a great project with so many benefits for the participants and those that use the pool.”
