Cullen Building Products, a Glenrothes-based manufacturing company, has been acquired by Illinois Tool Works for an undisclosed sum.

Illinois Tool Works, a $16bn US giant, is understood to have fought off competition from a number of other international conglomerates vying for the Fife family business.

Cullen, which was established 30 years ago and has since expanded into Canada, Ireland and France, manufactures and distributes connectors to the UK and overseas timber markets.

The company is one of the UK's market leaders in metalwork for the timber engineering market.

Doug Cullen, the company's managing director who will continue to lead the business, said: "The link with ITW will enable Cullen to maintain its brand and innovative culture and provide a financial platform to allow it to develop into a leading global connector company."

Edinburgh-based Mazars corporate advisory services provided financial advice to the vendors.

Gary Downey, of Mazars, said: "Much of the building trade is struggling in the current market so it is pleasing to see a local business securing employment in Scotland and with the potential for considerable profitable growth in the future from its Glenrothes base."
