THE future of Scotland's big-gest motor sport show is in doubt because of difficulties faced by spectators in getting to its venue.

Plans for the 2005 Mount Stuart Classic on the Isle of Bute have been scrapped after this year's event was cancelled due to transport difficulties.

The Marquis of Bute - the former Grand Prix driver Johnny Bute, who organises the event - said yesterday that the classic had become a victim of its own success, with the two ferry routes unable to cope with the demand.

The first two events, in 2002 and 2003, drew a collection of historic and current competition cars, with F1 drivers roaring round a 1.8 mile circuit set up in the grounds of Mount Stuart House, the lord's ancestral home.

Thousands of fans crossed the Firth of Clyde to savour the two-day festival, but the second day of the 2003 classic was marred by heavy rain and the organisers decided to bring it forward last year from September to August.

But the two ferries - from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay and from Colintraive to Rhubodach - could not cope.
