A MASKED raider fired a shotgun during a robbery at a petrol station in Clydebank yesterday. The shot just missed a 48-year-old female assistant's head, hitting a shutter behind her.

The robber was said to be about 5ft 8in and of medium build, a similar description given after a raid on another garage on Sunday. However, police said they were not linking the robberies at this stage.

The Clydebank assistant was left badly shaken as the man made off with a three-figure sum of money following the attack at 3.25am yesterday on West Highway Services in Great Western Road.

He wore a black balaclava and was distinctively dressed in a khaki jacket and camouflage trousers. He was last seen running towards Drumchapel.

Detective inspector David Gray, leading the investigation, said it was a terrifying ordeal for the woman.

He added: "The consequences could have been much worse. Fortunately it was only merchandise that was damaged as a result of his irresponsible actions.

"We want to catch this man before he tries something similar. The next person might not be able to walk away."

Stephen Harrison, the garage manager, said: "The sum of money lost is irrelevant.

The wellbeing of my employee is more important. She is extremely upset by what has happened."

In the robbery on Sunday, a man threatened a female member of staff with what appeared to be a gun at the Shell garage in Bearsden Road, Glasgow.

He escaped in a white vehicle.

He wore a dark blue hooded top, with the word DUFFER printed in white across the front.
