Former World Cup-winning coach Bob Dwyer has agreed to coach the Barbarians on their three-match tour next month.

Dwyer, who led Australia to World Cup glory in 1991, will take charge of the invitational side for the games against Scotland at Murrayfield on May 22, Wales at Bristol four days later, and England at Twickenham on May 30.

''I'm delighted to be invited again this year and be able to accept, now that I no longer have any responsibilities with the New South Wales Waratahs and Super 12 competition,'' said Dwyer.

''It is an exciting and satisfying role, working with elite players from different countries, with different playing styles, and seeing them gel into a successful team in the Barbarian style, with a limited time for training.''

A number of Australians have also accepted invitations to play for the Baa-baas, including Joe Roff, Chris Latham, and Matt Burke.

England skipper Lawrence Dallaglio is to undergo a brain scan after colliding

with Wasps team-mate Paul Volley during Sunday's Heineken Cup triumph over Gloucester. The back-rowers clashed heads in the first half, and both players required treatment for five minutes before resuming the match.

The scan is just a pre-cautionary measure and Dallaglio is expected to be given the green light for Sunday's Zurich Premiership clash with Leeds.

England fly-half Olly Barkley will have to explain to the RFU why part of his ticket allocation for the RBS 6 Nations championship came into the possession of unlicensed companies offering unofficial hospitality packages at Twickenham.

The 45th playing of the North Berwick Sevens tournament will take place on Saturday at Recreation Park.

Olympic gold medals in Athens would make a bigger impact on Marion Jones than those which she won in Sydney, she said on US television ahead of her first outdoor run of the year, over 400 metres this weekend in California.

"It would mean more to win golds in Athens than Sydney because of so much that has happened in my life since Sydney and so many obstacles that I have overcome," she said

The 28-year-old mother, will contest the 100 and 200m and long jump at the US trials, but any decision about the two relays will be deferred.

"I am disappointed in my performance in Sydney. It was a great experience, don't get me wrong, but I went there to get the whole kabang, everything."

Sunday's 400m at the Mount San Antonio College Relays will be her first outdoor race in 19 months, since the birth of her son by world 100m record holder Tim Montgomery.

lIndian seamer Lakshmipathy Balaji took four wickets yesterday as Pakistan were dismissed for 224 on a seaming pitch on the first day of the deciding third Test in Rawalpindi.

The 22-year-old was rewarded for his accurate line and length, dismissing opener Taufeeq Umar (nine), Asim Kamal (21), Kamran Akmal (17), and Shoaib Akhtar (0) after captain Saurav Ganguly elected to bowl.

But Mohammad Sami responded with a fighting 49 to give Pakistan some respectibility after they were reduced to 137 for eight, Ashish Nehra and Irfan Pathan adding two wickets apiece as the Indian pacemen revelled in helpful conditions.

Sami struck seven 4s in his highest test score, sharing in a record-equalling ninth-wicket stand of 70 with Fazl-e-Akbar (25).

Local hero Shoaib gave the Indian reply an early jolt, sending back Virender Sehwag for a first-ball duck when he miscued a flick to backward point, where Yasir Hameed juggled with the ball before catching it on his third attempt.

The visitors were 23 for one at the close, still 201 runs behind with Rahul Dravid on 10 with and makeshift opener Parthiv Patel on 13.

India, on their first full tour of Pakistan in more than 14 years, won the first Test at Multan by an innings and 52 runs. The hosts hit back with a nine-wicket win in Lahore.

British cyclist Jamie Alberts faces a two-year ban after testing positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol following his win on the Monts du Luberon race in France last month.

The 24-year-old, from Chesterfield, has been sacked by his French team CC Etupes and will return home later this week.

Alberts, who took the bronze medal in last year's British open road race championship, took the substance to aid his recovery from an operation to extend his left leg, which was slightly shorter than his right. He said: "I was told that the steroids I took would clear from my system in five days, but traces were obviously still there nine weeks later. I've got to accept that I'm almost certainly going to get a two-year ban."

lA court in France yesterday dismissed a lawsuit by the Cofidis team against the newspaper L'Equipe, claiming that it had breached confidentiality by publishing a statement from sacked rider Philippe Gaumont implicating several of the Cofidis team. The newspaper's lawyer said the court had ruled that no confidentiality laws had been broken.

Meanwhile, Australian Baden Cooke, winner of the points competition at last year's centenary Tour de France, announced plans to sue another French newspaper, Le Monde, after it published extracts of a telephone conversation dating back to September 2001 between former track rider Philippe Boyer and a woman said to be Cooke's girlfriend. It was claimed that the transcript revealed details of recreational drug abuse by Cooke.

lBelgium's Johan Museeuw, arguably the finest one-day cyclist in the world over the past decade, retires today after a 16-year career punctuated by 11 classic victories.

Museeuw, who was in a coma for more than two weeks following a motorcycle crash in 2000, burst into tears after finishing fifth in the Paris-Roubaix race on Sunday, his last big race. ''I couldn't help it,'' said the 38-year-old who, but for a puncture, might have equalled the record of four wins in the ''queen of classics'' held by compatriot Roger de Vlaeminck.

The recent decision to reduce the European Nations Cup to smaller A and B divisions has given Scotland a real challenge for next year in Leipzig.

By finishing a very creditable eighth in the last of the full-scale tournament in Barcelona, the Scots claimed the final spot in the A division, and Scotland have been drawn in the same pool as World and European champions Germany, Olympic gold medallists Holland, and France.

After 'crushing' England 2-1 in Barcelona, taking points off Germany and the Netherlands is perhaps the next step, but in Barcelona the Scots succumbed 5-1 to the talented Dutch.

Whether or not Scotland defeat France, the most realistic scenario is a relegation battle against either Belgium or Poland from the other pool.

Elena Baltacha eased herself back into com- petitive form winning through to the main draw of the Gaz de France Biarritz Open with wins against two qualifier seeds.

The Scot came from behind to take a deciding set tie-break and beat Lithuania's No.7 seed Lina Stancuite 3-6 6-4 7-6 (6-4).

Then she beat Gremany's Antonia Matic (9) 4-6 6-4 7-5.

Her success earned a place against Austrian main draw top seed Sybille Bammer, who won titles in Nottingham, Cardiff, and Jersey last autumn.

lMarat Safin recovered from an uncertain start to the clay-court season to beat Frenchman Cyril Saulnier 5-7 6-2 6-2 in the first round of the Estoril Open yesterday.

Safin wasted an early break and lost his serve in the final game of the first set to fall behind but the Russian eighth seed quickly discovered his rhythm to clinch victory in 2hr 3min.

One male seed fell early on the second day, with Florian Mayer, of Germany beating seventh seed Gaston Gaudio, of Argentina 6-3 6-4.

In the women's event, top seeded Russian Elena Bovina made a smart return from injury to beat Iva Majoli of Croatia 6-4 6-2 and claim her place in the second round.

There was one surprise among the women, with eighth seed Marion Bartoli, of France losing 6-3 6-3 to Italy's Maria Elena Camerin.
