A WOMAN punched the air in jubilation yesterday as she watched her

father go to jail for six years.

The father, who is 49, had admitted a series of sex offences against

his 27-year-old daughter over a four-year period starting when she was

11.

He threatened her that if she ever went to police the results could

have a terrible effect on the health of her grandmother.

When the grandmother died two years ago the daughter went to the

police in Edinburgh and told them of her ordeal.

Earlier this month the father, who comes from Edinburgh, appeared at

the High Court in Edinburgh accused of raping his daughter.

The Crown accepted a plea of guilty to reduced charges of indecent

assault.

Lord Milligan remanded the father, who cannot be named for legal

reasons, until yesterday for reports.

Yesterday at the High Court in Glasgow, solicitor/advocate Brian

Gilfedder told the judge that the father found it difficult to give any

explanation or reason for his conduct.

He said he had no contact at all with his daughter or estranged wife

except at his mother's funeral two years ago.

Jailing him for six years for what he described as an appalling series

of crimes, Lord Milligan told him he had shown no concern for the

effects of his crimes on his daughter, appeared to be only concerned

about the impact of any sentence on his own life, and showed a distinct

lack of remorse.
