DETECTIVES are trying to track down a man and a woman involved in the

latest in a series of similar incidents involving bogus social workers

or health visitors calling at homes in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and various

towns across Central Scotland.

In the most recent incident, a couple arrived at the door of a

disabled woman in Craigmount Brae, Edinburgh, around 9.30am on Boxing

Day, claiming they were social workers.

However, they were apparently scared off when the 59-year-old woman,

who is wheelchair-bound, insisted they produce some form of

identification.

A police spokesman said yesterday: ''When asked for identification,

the two made an excuse that it had been left in their vehicle.

''They then left the house and failed to return.''

The man is described as being aged about 30 and was smartly dressed.

The woman was around 25 and was wearing a dark brown coat.

A squad was set up by Lothian and Borders Police in March to

co-ordinate investigations into bogus social workers and similar

incidents after a spate of them in and around Edinburgh.

The squad has also been kept abreast of such incidents in Strathclyde

and Fife.

In some cases only one bogus caller -- a woman -- has been involved,

but others have involved a couple.
