THE Government wrote off more than #1500m of tax in 1993, Labour

claimed yesterday -- 10 times more than the #151m written off in 1979,

the year the Conservatives took office. Labour's Treasury spokesman

Harriet Harman said: ''The amount written off is equivalent to almost

half of the total employment and training budget.

''This Government is not only responsible for the biggest tax hike in

history, it is also guilty of the biggest failure to collect taxes in

history.''
