A DAY of fishy fun in Milford Haven looks set to be a fin-tastic success, thanks to backing from the town council to the tun-a of £2,800.

At a meeting of full council on Monday (April 27), local councillors agreed to help sponsor the Port of Milford Haven’s Fish Festival, which is set to take ‘plaice’ on Saturday, June 27.

The money will fund a children’s fish-themed craft workshop, event staff clothing, and a shuttle bus to the town centre.

The event is a scaled-down version of the popular annual Pembrokeshire Fish Week festival, which due to staff and funding issues, has been postponed until next year.

Mayor of Milford Haven, Councillor Eric Harries, said: “It was a disappointment to learn of the cancellation of Pembrokeshire Fish Week.

“It is an event that attracted very large support from the people of Milford Haven and surrounding districts and the town would have been poorer without it.

“Fortunately, from the town’s point of view, the Port of Milford Haven stepped in and arranged Milford Fish Festival and designed a programme which will have very wide appeal.

“On behalf of the townspeople, Milford Haven Town Council expresses gratitude and hopes for an exceptional event.”

Lucy James, Marketing Manager at the Port, who is co-ordinating the event, said:”We are delighted and very thankful to the Town Council for their support.

“The list of attractions is growing each week and we have a real mix of sectors who have signed up to attend, from chefs preparing fish dishes to on-water activities and entertainment.

“Further confirmed contributors and supporters will be announced over the coming weeks.

“We hope that everyone enjoys what is set to be a fantastic event.”

Among the highlights will be live food demonstrations from celebrity chef Stephen Terry – well known for his appearances on the BBC’s Great British Menu.

Celebrated local artist Dorian Spencer Davies has also been commissioned to create a unique piece of art to mark the occasion, which will be officially unveiled at the event.
