A FASHION student from Hakin has fought off stiff competition to secure a place at the world renowned Central Saint Martins in London.

Beth Lewis was among 5,000 Stella McCartney and John Galliano wannabes who applied for a place on the fashion and design, women’s wear course.

The application process was not for the faint hearted - 100 students were shortlisted, 40 were invited for an interview, and Beth was one of the six finalists selected to study this September.

Beth is about to complete the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion and Textiles at Pembrokeshire College, and will join the ranks of many talented students who have been given the creative freedom to flourish and aspire to top universities.

Beth’s senior lecturer at Pembrokeshire College, Sally James said: “Beth is a highly motivated individual who fully engages with her subject and sets herself high standards. She sees the value in the world beyond her main subject area as a catalyst for creative ideas and understands the rigours of the creative process. Her drawing and design development book show a contemporary outlook and is her constant companion.”

Beth was also offered a place to study at Kingston School of Art and Design, which is also another top university for designers.

She said: “To be given the choice of the two was just fantastic. I selected Saint Martins as they tend to give students the freedom to explore, which is what I am used to at college.

“They were really interested in my portfolio and design books, which show all of my creative thinking and processes. I think they liked the way I approach ideas and really enjoy the experimenting and design development.”

If you would like to follow in Beth’s footsteps, Pembrokeshire College is hosting a fashion and design taster day on Thursday, May 28 from 10.30am and 3.30pm.

The aim of the day will be to experience an intense micro project, which will explore the whole design process in a day.
