PEMBROKESHIRE’S beautiful coastline has again topped the charts.

The rugged beauty of Skomer and Marloes Sands have bagged them a place in the Lonely Planet top ten best places in Europe for family holidays.

Still considered something of a secret to those from outside the county, Skomer sits in a marine nature reserve, and is home to half a million birds – puffins, guillemots, gannets, fulmars, cormorants, razorbills, kittiwakes and petrels included.

Combined with grey seals, porpoises and dolphins splashing offshore, the Lonely Planet judges said the island was guaranteed to enthral visitors of all ages.

Marloes is also a great spot to birdwatch from, with the Mere attracting a large number of waterfowl in winter.

And for history fans, there is Marloes’ once well-defended Iron Age fort the Deer Park, and an impressive variety of sandstone and volcanic rocks to keep would-be geologists entertained.

Topping the Lonely Planet list was Kent, with Ireland’s County Kerry and Germany’s Black Forest completing the top three, while coming in at number ten – just behind Skomer and Marloes – was Bohinj, in Slovenia.
