PLANS for a controversial new ‘super school’ merging Hakin and Hubberston primary schools will go on display next week.

The designs for the new Hakin and Hubberston primary school will be available to view at two drop-in sessions, where visitors can ask questions and give feedback.

The plans were approved by county councillors in July 2014, following cabinet approval in April, and form part of the 21st Century Schools Programme, which is supported by the Welsh Government.

The decision followed months of speculation over the future of the two schools, and concerns about the loss of “family ethos” at Hubberston, and lack of parental choice.

A Facebook group was set up to help ‘save the schools from amalgamation’, and parents also held a peaceful protest outside Hubberston School.

Speaking last April, local councillor Viv Stoddart said parents were ‘passionate’ about retaining their small schools, adding that they considered the process ‘flawed from start to finish’.

A spokesman for Pembrokeshire County Council said: “The new school intends to provide a 21st century learning environment for three to 11-year-olds, bringing together Hakin Community Primary and Hubberston VC Primary.”

The plans will be on display at Hakin CP School on Wednesday, July 8, between 3.20pm and 6pm, and at Hubberston VC Primary School on Thursday, July 9, between 3.30pm and 6pm.

Following submission, the planning application will also be available to view on the county council’s website.
