A 12 year-old girl who suffered life changing injuries returned to her former school today (Wednesday) to receive a fundraising cheque.

Shannon Folena was seriously injured following a collision with a car on Freemans Way in Haverfordwest in March 2014.

The accident left her unable to move independently, and a fundraising appeal was launched to buy Shannon an eye gazer, which would allow her to communicate.

Shannon, accompanied by her parents Fiona and Paul, were invited to Fenton School for a special assembly, where they were presented with a cheque for £560. The children raised the money by holding a hot dog sale and Easter raffle.

Shannon’s former teacher, Theresa Swift, said: “We wanted to raise money for Shannon because she is a past pupil and her brother and sister have all been through the school.

“Shannon was in my class in year 6.”

“We’ve seen all the family come through and wanted to give them something back and help them with their care for Shannon.

“It’s so lovely to her today.”

Shannon’s mum Fiona said: “I would like to say a big thanks to Fenton School because we need funds for Shannon’s sensory garden and new software for her eye gazer.

“Shannon is doing fantastic. Over the last two weeks she has started to move her right side. Before that we had nothing for months.”

Shannon’s dad Paul said: “It’s just great that we’ve seen improvements with Shannon. You can see she understands what we say to her.

“Although her responses are non verbal, the expressions on her face or even hand movements tell us yes or no, which is great.

“We’ve got the roots now to build something on.”
