HUBBERSTON has been identified as one of 13 areas in Wales that could benefit from a £1 million funding pot – but local views are needed to make it happen

Invest Local is a new programme, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, that aims to give local people the chance to improve their area in the way that is best for them.

Rachel Harding, of Building Communities Trust, said Hubberston was identified as one of 13 areas in Wales that could benefit from the £1million funding, which will be delivered over the next ten years.

“This is an invitation for local people to give their views on what matters, and what would they like to see happen to make their area a better place to live,” she said.

“They know their community best.”

A meeting for local individuals, groups, volunteers, and businesses to have their say on what is needed in the area, and how any potential funding could best be spent, is to be held at Hubberston and Hakin Community Centre on Wednesday, January 27, at 6.30pm.

Asked whether the centre – which had been destined to close in April due to lack of funding – could stand to benefit from the money, if awarded, Ms Harding said: “If Hubberston and Hakin take up the offer, any money awarded will be theirs to do with as they see fit.”

It is understood that a reprieve to keep the centre open until the summer is currently in discussion, as the community continues to look at ways to take over its management.

Local councillor Mike Stoddart said: “We are naturally delighted that Invest Local is taking an interest in the area we represent and we are cautiously optimistic that, if the community can come together to support this initiative, there could be significant and much needed investment.

“Invest Local has stressed that that this must be driven by the community and it is important that as many people as possible attend the meeting on January 27 to put forward their views on how this initiative can be taken forward.

“If anyone would like more information, please contact myself or Cllr Viv Stoddart on 01646 692758.”

Asked on the current status of the centre, a spokesman for the county council said: “We are continuing to explore all options to keep Hubberston and Hakin Community Centre open, including looking at others sources of funding.”
