SEA Cadets from Milford Haven are celebrating their latest competition win, as their nationwide charity marks its 160th birthday.

Local youngsters recently took part in the West Wales District Sea Cadets Sailing Regatta at Tata Lake, near Margwm.

The sailing regatta comprises of a number of categories, including Topper, RS Quest, Pico, Bosun, PY Class and the Junior Sea Cadets.

For the first time in nearly three years, Milford Haven were present in the PY Class, Topper and also the Junior Sea Cadets Topper, claiming a first, third and fifth place altogether.

Commanding Officer, Lieutenant (SCC) William Elliott RNR, said: "We are all extremely proud of Ciaran and the other sailors who attended the competition and cannot believe how much our sailors are improving for the first return to this regatta.

"Thanks to the Unit staff for supporting and attending the day but also to Julian, Adrian and Alex at PYC who support our sailing sessions on a Wednesday; a true example of community collaboration."

The Cadets have had a busy few weeks, fundraising at Milford Haven Fish Festival on Saturday and Sunday, and celebrating 160 years of the Sea Cadets.

Captain Sea Cadets, Captain Phil Russell RN, said: “Over the past 160 years the charity’s inspired millions of young people to find their course in life by building confidence and skill gained on the water – it lasts a lifetime.”

Since 1856 the charity has helped thousands of young people find friendships, confidence and a new sense of direction.

This year, the charity is fundraising to replace its two yachts with larger, more modern vessels, so that it can help more youngsters experience the confidence and thrill sailing at sea can build.
