A HAKIN man has raised £1,850 for Macmillan Cancer Support by pedalling his way around Wales.

Chris Holman, 29, set off on his epic five-day adventure from Milford Haven on October 10, with the goal of raising £1,500.

“Over the past few years I know my family, friends or close relatives have either suffered through the treatment to beat cancer, or have lost the battle with it,” said Chris.

“I wanted like to make a difference in helping one of the biggest support charities, to ensure the correct resources are made available for many years to come.”

Chris trained six days a week with a coach to prepare for the trip, which saw him head up through mid-Wales, over Snowdonia, and then up to the top of Wales, before returning home.

“I've always wanted to cycle around Wales for charity but I really needed to ensure I was fit enough to complete the challenge successfully,” he said.

“The route was much harder than expected, with a few detours and mechanical failures during the week,” said Chris.

“This was the first time I have ever cycled more than 100miles back to back, never mind for five days.”

Friend Tom Arnold cycled 80 miles over the Shropshire hills to meet him along the way, a gesture Chris said gave him a real “morale boost”.

“I can honestly say I would have cracked if I rode this route alone,” he said.

During the final leg, he also received support from friends and family across Pembrokeshire, with a support vehicle and seven local riders joining him for parts of the route home.

He was greeted at Pembrokeshire Yacht Club by his loved ones and supporters, and a few well-earned celebratory drinks.

In total, Chris biked 580 miles, and climbed 39,000 ft.

Chris thanked all those who have supported his fundraising, including Milford Tritons riding group, FBM Holidays, and Mikes Bikes of Haverfordwest, for supplying him with essential kit.
