A NINE-year-old boy has raised an incredible sum to help a Pembrokeshire toddler diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer.

Joe Young, from Rosemarket, raised £4,000 for Newport tot Eliza Donnelly, after reading about her plight in the local paper.

The two-year-old was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma in July, and her family and friends have been trying to raise £60,000 to pay for treatments to complement her chemotherapy.

Said Joe's mum Nicola: "Joe started all this when he read about Eliza in the Western Telegraph a few weeks before his baptism and said he was so sad for that little girl, and wanted her to have a life like he had."

He raised around £300 through a donation box at his baptism service in August, but keen to do more, his family also organised a fundraising night at their local pub last month.

Joe, along with godfather Kevin Locke, had his head shaved, and family friend Daniel Owen also braved a chest wax on the night.

"As his parents we are so touched by his kind heart, and his brother and two sisters are so very proud of him," said Nicola.

"A huge huge thank you must go to local businesses and friends for all the support they have given to help Joe to help Eliza.

"We would also like to thank Tegan of Todaro's and her mum Sarah who did the shaving, Claire who did the waxing, auctioneer Alan John, and a huge thank you to Simon from the Huntsman Inn, Rosemarket, who helped make the night so amazing."

Joe's donation, along with fundraising efforts around the county, mean Eliza's family have now hit their £60,000 target.
