South Wales Women’s Hockey League Division 2:
Cardiff University 4ths 4
Milford Haven 3

MILFORD dropped off the top of the table despite an impressive fightback against Cardiff University at Talybont.

It proved a real ‘game of two halves’ for the visitors, who eventually lost out in a seven goal thriller.

The students started brightly and several early chances went begging before they deservedly took the lead through a well-worked short corner.

And despite falling behind, Milford failed to take heed of the wake up call and they were punished again with two further goals, as the home side capitalised with quick counter attacks that left the visitors vulnerable at the back.

At that stage, it looked like it was going to be a very long day at the office for the Milford ladies but they eventually reacted - and only some good saves from the home goalkeeper prevented them from pulling an immediate goal back. and were prevented from getting on the score board.

But just before half time they were given hope by centre forward Elyse Morgan, who reacted to a loose ball in the D to nudge passed the home keeper and give her side a boost before half time.

The interval team talk proved to be a productive one for Milford as they came out for the second half a different side and piled on the pressure straight away.

The team began to work well as a unit, and some good build up play allowed Steph Layton to finish first time from a well worked cross by Rachel Coe.

The momentum was now with the Milford side who enjoyed long periods of possession and tested the University defence on several occasions.

The continued pressure eventually resulted in an attacking short corner for the visitors - and a well delivered ball by Charlotte Davies was received by Emma Summons and slipped to Morgan, who struck a well-placed shot for her second goal.

With the scores level and 10 minutes to play, both teams pressed hard to find a winner.

Despite some good defensive work by the away side, the students managed to finish from close range in a goal mouth scramble and deny Milford the point there fightback deserved.

“We reacted really well after going 3-0 down and showed a great attitude to get back into the game,” said skipper Summons afterwards.

“After a solid second half, it was disappointing not to come away with a point.”

Milford’s next game is away to Rhondda 2nds this Saturday.
