THE family of an aspiring young gymnast are a step closer to accessing surgery that could change her life, following a fantastic fundraising event.

Ten-year-old Megan Sadler will travel to America later this month, for a consultation with doctors at the Shriners Children's Hospital in Philadelphia.

Her family is hopeful they will also receive news on a date for VBT surgery, to straighten Megan's spine.

Megan has scoliosis - curvature of the spine - and has to wear a restrictive spinal brace for 23 hours a day.

Last week, an event at Milford Haven Gymnastics Club - where Megan is a member - raised almost £850.

Donations from friends of the club of around £1,500, and £1,000 from Milford Haven Rotary Club brings the fundraising total to just over £5,700.

Megan's mum Laura said she was incredibly grateful to the club, West Wales Show Choir which performed on the night, and the Rotary Club.

"We are so blessed to have these amazing people in our lives who support and care about Megan so much to do all this for her," she said.

A spokesman for the gymnastics club said: "We truly wish Laura and all her family all the very best for the future and hope that Megan will soon be having this much needed operation so that she will be able to continue with her passion of gymnastics."

Added the Rotary Club: "Many people in Pembrokeshire were touched by the plight of young Megan Sadler, while also being heartened by the Shriners Hospital offering surgery to help her condition.

"The surgery is being provided free of charge but the Sadler family are desperately trying to raise £20,000 to pay for airfares to and from America, accommodation and living costs while there, and also drugs and medicines for Megan."
