SCHOOL children in Pembrokeshire have been putting their best forward in the annual Walk to School week.

The national campaign aims to reverse the decline in the number of children who walk to school – which has dropped from 70 per cent to less than half in a generation.

The event was supported by Pembrokeshire County Council’s road safety team.

“Walking to school helps children keep healthy and happy and get ready to learn, as well as reducing pollution and congestion outside schools,” said Sally Jones, assistant road safety officer.

“We had lots of schools take part in the week right across Pembrokeshire, and were really pleased with the turn out.”

She said Johnston CP School's efforts were exceptionally well-attended, with many pupils and parents joining the walk as well as Ziggy the Zebra, road safety mascot.

Deputy headteacher Tim Pounder said it was a great success.

“It started off at KO Carpets with quite a small number, which gradually got bigger as we walked through the village,” he said.

“It would be great if the enthusiasm can be maintained, and pupils and their families continue to walk to school whenever they can.”

As part of their drive to encourage more people to ditch their cars on the school run, the road safety team organises WOW days in Pembrokeshire (Walk Once a Week).
