THE grounds of Withybush Hospital had a much needed facelift at the weekend thanks to a team of hardworking volunteers.

Ann's Withybush Volunteer Ground Force team spent three days cleaning up and cutting back the overgrown grounds.

They all came together thanks to David Williams and his tribute to stalwart health campaigner Ann Doran (previously Harding) who died recently.

"With the help of around 15 Pembrokeshire Mudslingers, a few Withybush staff and numerous members of public (including a couple of councillors) we achieved much more than I thought possible. A mix of generation & gender which was great.

"Pembs Mudslingers did a second cut on whole of site and strimmed all round, industrious ladies and gentlemen digging out weeds, thistles has already transformed the place.

"Those of us who were friends and have campaigned with Ann for the hospital in recent years know that she would have really appreciated the effort that has been put in to improving the grounds," said David.

He also thanked Mark and David Carter who did a 'first cut' of the whole site which took them five and a half hours non-stop.

MPH Hire donated two days free use of a petrol strimmer and hedge cutter while volunteers were kept energised with refreshments from Aldi, Princes Gate Spring, Tesco, Morrisons and the Withybush staff.

The team is now hoping to recruit 30 to 40 volunteers maintain the grounds fortnightly during summer (less in winter). The plan is to divide volunteers into teams so noone has to do more than once every six weeks or two months.

"I am also starting to work on projects such as laying artificial grass in creche area at rear of staff quarters and more appropriate flower/shrub planting so appeal to companies, nurseries, gardening clubs etc for donations to carry out. Let’s show how much we all value and appreciate our Hospital and staff and are prepared to put effort into keeping it," added David.
