GREEN-fingered neighbours have been smartening up the Place, to help raise money for charity.

Resident at Precelly Place, in Milford Haven, have again taken part in a street growing competition, run by local man Robert Hoggins.

The annual event raises money for Meningitis Now, as well as bringing the community together.

Categories included tallest sunflower, biggest sunflower head, best window box, best planter, best scarecrow, and best hanging basket.

Many families have taken part, with children also helping design a special planter to brighten up the street sign, which was built by town councillor Byron Jenkins.

Val Brown claimed the title for tallest sunflower, with her plant measuring 8' 6''.

Asked what her secret is, Mrs Brown, 75, said: "I just tell them to grow for me.

"When I was younger my mother said I was green-fingered."

Said the Mayor of Milford Haven, Cllr Colin Sharp: "It's a great event that brings together a whole street.

"I am full of praise for Robert for his hard work, and everyone of Precelly Place for getting involved and supporting such a worthwhile cause, as well as bringing a smile to the face of anyone who walks by."

Residents also enjoyed a private 'street' party' at the Manchester Club on Sunday, August 20, where all the category winners were revealed.
