BASS baritone Emyr Wyn Jones has been named the inaugural Douglas Rees Memorial young opera singer of the year 2017.

Following a rousing evening of music at St Katharine and St Peter's Church, Milford Haven, on Saturday, September 2, Emyr was presented with the £2,000 prize and the winner's crystal trophy by competition sponsor Ralph Rees of Fred Rees Garages Skoda Haverfordwest.

Congratulations also went to the three superb finalists, soprano Sioned Llewelyn, tenor Rhodri Prys Jones and mezzo-soprano Eirlys Myfanwy Davies.

Thanks also went to the judging panel, Donald Maxwell, Gary Griffiths and Camilla Roberts, official accompanist Caradog Williams, presenter Beverley Humphreys and Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir, conducted by Richard Stephens, who concluded the night with a rendition of the Welsh national anthem.

Event founder June Rees said: "We wish our winner Emyr well as he embarks on two years at the National Opera Studio in London.

"We are thrilled to be contributing to the lives of young singers and thank Help Musicians UK for the inspiration to do so."
