A MOTHER is campaigning for a new bus stop in her area, after becoming worried about her teenage daughter’s wait for the morning school bus.

Jo Roberts of Rosehill has petitioned Pembrokeshire County Council to add a shelter to the junction of the B4341 road to Broad Haven where her daughter catches the bus to Tasker Millward School every day, so she and the other two children who wait there can remain dry and safe.

Mrs Roberts and one of her neighbours currently have to park their cars at the edge of the junction to Rosehill to wait with their children until the bus arrives at the designated stop area.

She says this is a hazard as other cars have to manoeuvre around them at the junction.

“I am not complaining about having to drive my daughter to the bus, I feel that is my duty as a parent. The reason I am campaigning is because I am not able to leave her at the end of the road, I have to stay with her as it is a very exposed stretch of road,” she said.

Mrs Roberts has spoken to PCC’s highways department about a new bus stop, and met with them to suggest plans for one but has been told there is no provision in the budget to build one.

The council also told her she would be more likely to have it built if it were closer to a town.

“This seems to be entirely at odds with the PCC transport Plan which aims to take more cars off the road and promote more sustainable public transport,” said Mrs Roberts.

The Rosehill resident has also suggested that changing the bus route could prevent the traffic build-up while she waits with her daughter.

A spokeperson for PCC said: “The Council does not have a specific budget for bus shelters. Bus stops are occasionally provided when funding becomes available.

“There are several bus stops in rural areas, some paid for by the community and others by the County Council on the basis of projected use.

“Bus routes are planned to offer the most direct route possible for all passengers, changing the route would add additional mileage, time and cost.”

They added that there is a ranked database on sites for potential bus stops and information is collected about the number of bus services serving different areas, and how many requests they have received for new a bus stop in certain places.

The council also conducts surveys of bus service operators for this database.
