YSGOL Wdig pupils are jumping for joy, having bagged the top cash reward in Tesco's Bags of Help initiative.

The school's Active Wdig project was in the running for a cash boost of either £1,000, £2,000 or £4,000 and was up against two other Pembrokeshire projects in this summer's community voting process.

The Friends of Ysgol Wdig learnt last week that the project gained the most votes in the Goodwick and Haverfordwest Tesco stores, winning the maximum amount of cash.

Active Wdig is raising funds for a new fixed play equipment in the infants and junior playground of the school.

The steeply sloping playground currently has no fixed equipment in it and it will cost the Friends of Ysgol Wdig £7,000 to install a low-level timber trail, made up of five different items, with an accompanying safe surface.

Last week the friends also learnt that the town council will fund two pieces of play equipment to the tune of more than £700.

"This is fantastic news," said a spokesman for Ffrindiau Ysgol Wdig. "We are over the moon to have won the top amount and would like to thank all who voted for us as well as Shani Jackson who did all the background work and filled in the application for us.

"This money means that our target is now a lot more attainable and we will be continuing to fundraise over the coming months so the children can benefit from the new equipment as soon as possible."

Tesco Bags of Help initiative sees grants of up to £4,000, all raised from the 5p bag levy, being awarded to thousands of local community projects.

The scheme's criteria have recently been extended to include any project that benefits the community and funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities.
