FISHGUARD Flyers swimming club is in with the chance of securing nearly £1,000 to allow their members to train at the Wales National Pool, but needs your votes to help make it happen.

The flyers have been entered for the Aviva Community Fund and are appealing for £918, which would pay for two trips from Fishguard to the Wales National Swimming Pool in Swansea as well as hire of two lanes for two hours for the flyers' swimmers.

Founded in 1999 Fishguard Flyers is a competitive swimming club run entirely by volunteers from the local community with 60 members aged from seven to 59.

In the past year 11 flyers have been selected for the Pembrokeshire County squad, six reached the finals of the Welsh National Urdd Gala, two won bronze medals in the final and the flyers relay team won silver.

Several of the group's older swimmers have competed at high levels in both triathlon and open water events, bringing home a haul of medals.

The club is one of six development clubs that provides swimmers to Pembrokeshire County Swimming.

The club trains at Fishguard Leisure Centre's 25 metre pool, but often competitions are held in 50 metre pools.

"Our nearest 50 metre pool is in Swansea, over 70 miles away," said head coach Friederike Schmidt. "For many of our swimmers, especially the younger members, it can be daunting having to compete at a gala in a 50 metre pool when they have only ever swum in a 25 metre pool.

"We are very proud of all our swimmers who train extremely hard at their sport. We feel that they deserve the opportunity to experience training in a 50 metre pool. It will encourage them and help to build their confidence, enabling them to achieve their full potential at long course galas."

Anyone who lives in the UK and registers on the Aviva Community Fund website can submit ten votes until November 21.
