REPAIR work is underway in Milford Marina, after a massive lock gate was torn from its hinges by the sheer power of Storm Ophelia earlier this month.

The 80 tonne gate was left floating in the mouth of the marina as the Pembrokeshire coast was lashed by winds touching 90mph.

Around a dozen fishing vessels were trapped in the marina until the huge gate was pulled from the marina by the tug Svitzer Gelliswick.

The Port of Milford Haven said the damaged gate was due to be towed to the J Wall yesterday (Wednesday), where it will be righted by a 500-tonne crane.

Damage to the top side of the gate will then be assessed and any essential steelwork repairs undertaken.

The Ravestein barge Skyline 22 is scheduled to arrive in a couple of weeks time and it is planned to refit the gate into position shortly afterwards.

Storm Ophelia caused damage around the waterway, with the Griffin Inn in Dale hit hard by huge waves and subsequent flooding.
