AN EXCITING and creative collaboration between Fishguard Musical Society and the award-winning Goodwick Brass Band is coming to Fishguard’s Theatr Gwaun this weekend.

Friday evening sees the premier of the much loved Brassed Off, with performances on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

A talented local cast is joining forces with the brass band to bring the stage version of the 1996 film to Fishguard, raising money for the community venue at the same time.

The play will take its audience on a journey back to 1996 on the picket line of Grimley colliery, as the colliery band battle with pit closures, bailiffs at the door and relationship problems.

At the same time they are determined not to quit the band and let Danny, the band leader, down as he dreams of the band reaching the National Finals at the Albert Hall.

Based on the real experiences of miners in Grimethorpe during the pit closures of the 1990s the play promises a heartfelt and poignant story, with music played live by the fabulous Goodwick Brass Band.

Brassed Off is Fishguard Musical Theatre Society’s third show in less than a year and it is hoped it will realise director Clare Malone-Hallet’s ambition of raising £10,000 for the community venue in 12 months. Around £8,400 has been raised so far, following two successful shows.

“Brassed Off looks as if it is going to be brilliant,” said Clare. “We have a supremely talented and committed cast as well as fantastic music played live on stage by the prize-winning Goodwick Brass Band.

“The cast and band have been working really hard to present a real treat which will hopefully also raise much-needed funds for Theatr Gwaun and the brass band.”

Performances of Brassed Off are at 7pm from December 1st – 4th, with a matinee at 2pm on Saturday 2nd.

The play contains strong language and some scenes that may be upsetting for young children and is categorised 12A. Tickets are just £8 (£6 under 16s and £7 FOTG) and can be booked at theatrgwaun.com or by calling 01348 873421.
